Book Review: The Dragon and The Turtle Go On Safari

The Dragon and The Turtle Go On Safari
By
Donita K. Paul and Evangeline Denmark

Just like the title states, this book is about a dragon and a turtle that go on safari. Roger the turtle and Padraig the dragon are excited for a campout and a safari; that is until they start to hear noises in the dark. Though many of the noises scare them, one of them leads them into a rescue adventure.  After the adventure they have trouble going back to sleep so they head home and decide to safari another day…..after a much needed nap.

I chose this book based on the title; I thought my kids would really like a book about a dragon and a turtle on safari. Flipping through the pages of the book, I thought the illustrations were quite cute.  Upon reading the story, I was disappointed.  The story was pretty anti-climatic and didn’t really seem like there was any point to it. At the back of the book is another short story as well as a discussion guide. This book would have been much better if the included short story and discussion topics were woven into the story. The manner in which they are included in the book makes them seem as though they were an afterthought.  Overall, I was not impressed with the book; it could have been something so much better.

This book can be found at Amazon and Barnes and Noble, as well as many other retailers.
