Book Review: Praying for Boys

Praying for Boys
by
Brooke McGlothin

Any mother of boys can tell you that raising boys can be tough, they’re full of energy, rambunctious and often stubborn. Brooke McGlothin, co-founder of the MOB society (www.themobsociety.com), knows this full well. In the midst of struggling with raising her sons, Brooke had a realization that no amount of disciple and struggle can truly change a boy’s behavior.  We as moms can’t do it on our own, but God can! What our sons need is for us to cover them in prayer, we need to pray for their hearts. The fruit of McGlothin’s realization is her new book, Praying for Boys. This book is a guide for moms who desire to pray for their sons, seeking God’s protection and guidance for them.

After an introduction and  account of how she was led to write the book, there are 21 chapters each addressing a specific area in which we can pray for our sons – topics like heart change, purity, self control and salvation. Each chapter includes a list of verse you can pray over your son as well as questions to be used for reflection or discussion. The end of the book has advice on how to use this book as a group study.

I love this book!  It’s so important to pray for our children and Brooke has given moms of boys a great starting point for this. The chapters are just long enough to encourage, but not so long that they are overwhelming. The verses provided are awesome and written in a way that you can use your child’s name to fill in the blanks making it even more personal. While it is written as a book for moms, any parent, grandparent, etc. could use this book as a way to pray for a boy in their life. Most of it could even be applied to daughters. There is so much power in prayer and I can’t wait to see where it takes our family as my husband and I begin to pray these verses over our son.
